I love our Easter traditions. We decorate cookies while watching a movie that points to God’s mercy, like the 10 Commandments or The Case For Christ. Matt gives me Cadbury Caramel Eggs. We sing the same songs annually, like In Christ Alone and Up From the Grave. We read the same passages of God’s Word.
Year after year, I look forward to these things. But if I’m honest, there is such a thing as too many caramel eggs. Sometimes, we don’t finish the whole movie. And sometimes, I get distracted when we’re singing familiar words.
Even the best things in this life lose their luster. Everything gets old – except for what’s forever new.
At Easter, we celebrate the story that every story points to. It’s been retold since the beginning, and it will resound when the end ends. God’s Word repeats the wonder again and again:
His mercies are new every morning (Lam 3:23).
Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day (2 Cor 4:16).
The inheritance we receive in Him will never perish or fade (1 Pet 1:4).
The life He gives us is everlasting (1 Jn 5:11).
So it is with awe that we will repeat again and again forever:
Worthy is the Lamb!
All blessing and honor and glory belong to Him!
Praise Jesus!
Whether we’ve only just realized that the empty tomb of Jesus is our salvation or we’ve smiled at the stone rolling away for many years, the heart that belongs to Christ cannot help but rejoice in forever newness in Him.
And if we struggle to feel it, we can turn and ask His help ceaselessly. Because there it is again: grace upon grace. Forgiveness freely given. Help even to believe. Life anew in Christ forever and ever, amen!
Praise God the hope of eternity with Him will never grow old.
