It’s Very Simple, and Very Complicated

I love that God’s Word can handle both the really simple and the really complicated.

For example, 1 Corinthians 10:31 says: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Eating and drinking are basic necessities of life. Most of us eat and drink daily; many of us do so often without putting much thought or effort into it. In this, we can glorify God. He can be honored in the way and the reason we do mundane, uncomplicated things.

But, while this verse is referencing these simple, necessary activities, the context also applies to more nuanced and complex parts of life, too.

In the chapters leading up to “whatever you do,” Paul addresses complicated issues of freedom in Christ, matters of conscience versus absolute truth, judgment, Christian witness, demonic interaction, and a whole lot more. What the Corinthians “ate and drank” was contentious because some were being offered food that had been sacrificed to idols.

The answer, whether we’re reading the verse thinking of simple things of life or weighing heavy spiritual issues, is the same.

Do it all to the glory of God.

This is freeing, and anchoring.

If we’re feeling frustrated with things that seem less than meaningful, exciting, or worthwhile, we are freed to rejoice and persevere. God can be glorified in our ordinary and mundane faithfulness – like when we thank Him for the cereal we munch in the morning.

If we’re feeling lost about what to do as big decisions or hard struggles overwhelm us, we are anchored in peace and hope. God can be glorified in our wrestling, uncertain faithfulness. We don’t have to be anxious about by complex issues, even spiritual ones, because we know the One who freely gives wisdom and we know we’re secure in Him whether we “figure it all out” or not.

Praise God!
