You’ve probably answered the question before: if you could have one superpower what would it be? That’s a fun question, and it’s one that many of us have an equally fun answer for.
“I would fly” you say. She might say that she would make herself able to freeze time, whereas her husband might suggest that he’d like superhuman strength.
The answers come easily.
When the Lord gave us free will and individual abilities, He gave us superpowers. We just tend to think of more fanciful ideas when we think of power.
In reality, think about all the power we have over:
• Our relationships
• Our time
• Our finances
• Our thoughts
• Our emotional well-being
• Our circumstances
Our ability to fit so much into one day’s time is powerful. That we can make others feel loved is an amazing gift. These powers of ours are all gifts from the Lord.
Like our favorite fictional heroes and villains, we get to choose to use God’s gifts for good or for evil.
“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.” Galatians 5:7
Unfortunately, many of us act more often on the inclinations of the flesh. We choose to use our time for evils like selfishness or laziness. Our finances are used for evils that boost our pride or give worldly gain that proves only our love of money.
Even our thoughts and words, as powerful as they are, are often used for evil purposes.
Complaining, putting others down, speaking critically, and thinking judgmentally are all ways that these gifts from God are misused to build up the corruption of the flesh.
To live by the Spirit, the powers that God has given to us are in submission to His will. Our time, energy, thoughts, and more are directed according to His way so that they glorify Him. That’s what good is, and that’s the best we can use our powers for.
