Reminder: We Need Reminders!

A friend recently asked me to help her improve her planning skills. I beamed at the request and could hardly wait to share my top tip with her: remind, remind, remind.

If you have a deadline, write it down so you remember. Then count back two days and write a reminder to work on it. Then count back a few more days and write another reminder to start working on the project. Put reminders in planners, your phone, on sticky notes. Ask people around you to remind you of things.

Reminders are one of the best ways to stay on track with our schedules and goals. Reminders are also vital to staying the course in our faith. Click To Tweet

God Naturally Put Reminders Into Place

Have you ever considered how, when God created everything, He could have just made life one long, endless lump of time? In the very beginning, God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years” (Gen 1:14).

Night and day are reminders to us that time is passing and we need to make the most of it!

God Knows We Need Reminding

One of my favorite “moments” in Biblical history is when God told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 11 to remind themselves of His Word constantly! He told them to memorize, wear, share, teach, decorate with, and otherwise put reminders of His Word into every aspect of their lives.

Solomon echoes this in several Proverbs, referring to God’s wisdom as an ornament, as life, nutrition, protection, and more. Jesus repeats phrases like “don’t be afraid,” SO many times.

We forget what we don’t remember to remember, so God reminds us frequently in His Word.

What We Need to Remember Day by Day

Many of my beloved writing friends are believers sharing about their faith. One of the most frequent comments I make on their websites is simply, “thanks for the reminder!” That’s because reminders of who God is are what you and I need day by day.

We can remember a lot about God- and still not remember Him in our everyday thoughts, choices, and circumstances. Click To Tweet

Suggestions for Reminding Yourself

I am blessed to have many reminders about God built into my life. My husband talks to/about Jesus with me every day. I get to work on blogs, articles, and many projects about God and His Word. Friends have blessed us with décor that features Bible verses. Many of our loved ones talk about God often.

Still, we can never have enough reminders about our precious Savior and Lord! He is the way, the truth, and the life- and the most important!

Here are some ways I intentionally build reminders about God into my life, in case they may be helpful to you, too. Click To Tweet
  • Memorize Bible verses or passages that are important to you
  • Read God’s Word every day, even if just a little bit
  • Keep prayer lists someplace you’ll see them often
  • Participate in Bible studies, even independently, that help you get deeper in the Word
  • Text back and forth with a friend on a regular basis about what God is doing in your life
  • Pick a song to listen to when you wake up or drive to work that is rich with God’s truth
  • Write God’s Word down. Write some prayers down. Write quotes about God down.
  • Stick notes with reminders about God where you’ll see them often
  • Read books and blogs about God. Follow social media accounts that share about Christ.

How do you saturate your life with reminders of the One who is most important? What are your best tips for remembering how incredible our unchanging God is?

  1. I agree, regular reminders are so important! It’s too easy to be distracted by the world if we’re not intentional about remembering God. I think your list of practical ways to do this is great. Several of these are ones that I find helpful too and I can’t think of anything else to add right now!

    1. The world is so distracting! (Says the girl who got distracted by other webpages a minute ago.) So thankful for reminders too!

  2. I think this is why God repeats so many thoughts and themes throughout the bible. We need to be reminded of these truths regularly.
I know that I for one, tend to forget things pretty quickly so I’m glad that the Lord uses various method to get my attention and remind me of certain important things. These reminders could be of a biblical truth or they could be something seemingly mundane (like a task I forgot to complete at work).
But sometimes we can become too busy in our daily lives and we sometimes neglect to hear Him speak to us.

    1. Yes! I think God repeats Himself much in the Bible (and in life today) for good reason. We are easily distracted and forgetful. Thanks for joining the conversation!
